Piet Mondrian for preschoolers to teenagers

Today we did a piece in Mondrian style. This is a great extension for learning squares and rectangles. For us the idea came about after learning about light where the book we are using talked about how black lines brings out the colours in a painting. You can also use it purely as an art lesson of course.

I pre-cut the black lines - a set of thick and a set of thin- before the lesson and gave the children colour paper in primary colours for them to cut out themselves.

Before the lesson we read Mondrian's biography . I talked a bit about his background and style. The site also has a word search activity the children can do after they have finished their piece. A sample of Mondrian's work could be put up for the children to model after and learn about his style.

Besides paper, you can also of course work with paint, beeswax  or markers. I chose paper because we have been working with paint for a while.

Our work. Guess which is mine?
