Faith-based learning
Today, I was listening to a lecture and one of the panelists commented on how when he was a student studying the quran and sunnah, people would ask him, " What job will you do when you grow up?".
The panelist pointed out that the quran (and sunnah) had more than just religious teachings, you can find almost everything in them and thus there are many avenues you can take.
This struck me of how the quran and sunnah is a rich source of interest- based learning.
If a parent goes through the quran with his or her child, they will find topics ranging from astronomy to finance. This can be a launchpad to letting the child explore the topic he becomes interested in further.
In trying to pursue his or her interest, the child will then have his basis in the quran and sunnah (faith-based learning) and his studies will be guided by Islamic teachings as the structure on which his knowledge will be organised.
Thus, the classical school of thought where students learn the quran and sunnah first before everything else is way ahead of us and should be returned to.
What a reminder to myself indeed.
A reminder to myself who has always been intrigued with alternative Western schools of educational thought when the answers were right before me.
