Whirlwind January

The best cure for laziness is work.

On that note, we have jumped straight into homeschool after a last minute break in Malaysia at the end of the year. This year, we are trying to start school at 8 a.m, alhamdulillah quite successfully so far with 10- 15 minutes delays.

I think this will be a year of much reflection and correction to mistakes I have made in homeschooling. May Allah guide and bless us.

For example, I now have a new section in my lesson tracking where I put in what subjects I have done with my students so I don't forget. There have been years where I put a lot of attention to one subject and almost ignore another, leading to learning gaps.

We start the school day with our quran circle. I have to admit, I feel the pressure to have my children excel in their quran reading and memorisation; what with the brilliant parent- friends I have around me. Here is where I put up my hand and say (to myself) ...

STOP! Get a hold on your self and  go with our own flow, for your sanity.

So, in our quran circle each child chooses a station where he works on a different aspect of the quran for 10 minutes (I plan to eventually increase it to 20, but don't tell the kids). At the end of the time, an alarm goes off and he goes to the next station. Our stations are- recitation, hafazan of old surah, hafazan of new surah, listening to quran recitation on youtube, reading the tafsir and tasmi'. Which works out nicely to an hour at 10 minutes a station.

When I'm running late, the kids would start on a station that doesn't require me to be around.

I usually teach my eldest first as he has classes Mondays to Wednesday evenings, plus he can be more independent and can (with some pushing) do his work on his own thereafter. There are some lessons that I teach the three older children together with them then separating to do different levels of work. (usually for English and Malay).

While I teach the eldest, the other children are usually on their laptop doing their online lessons or finishing homework from the day before. I also have a few books that I read to Sarah daily to make sure I don't miss teaching her for that day.

Evenings are spent on housekeeping and Aisyah (that girl is getting really active!). I had planned to do markings, review and planning during the night but have been sleeping like a baby with my baby when I feed her. I have been blessed with a few nights doing them though and try to catch up on weekends.

How has your homeschooling been for the new year? Hope it's been inspiring and gearing up for speed insyaa Allah.
