Old Mother Hubbard

I think it's always nice to have new or more company when you're doing something very much on your own and against the acceptable norm. Of course I'm talking about homeschooling, although on some days it feels like that when you're only trying to carry out your responsibilities as a Muslim.

We had a nice gathering yesterday, even though there was only three of us but I think the children, and the mums, had a ball. We had conversation, lots of dessert and teh tarik; what more can you ask for on a lazy, cool, afternoon at home with ten kids in a flat in Singapore?

I always believe that it's a sign from Allah that you're doing something right when he sends fellow believers to join you in what you are trying to do, even for a short moment, it is a boost to what could have been a faltering fight or a descend into a mechanical routine.

It was heartening to listen from a fellow mother about the activism of our fellow homeschooling sisters in UK: of them coming together, raising funds and even getting a place to carry out their good work Mashaallah. Insyaallah one day we'll be more pro-active.

Today we read, 'Kancil Mencuri Ketimun', actually a Bahasa Indonesia book, which nevertheless my kids were interested in. However, I realise this might be confusing for my children for BI can be very different not only in the spelling but also the usage of words.

After outdoors, we attempted to do an experiment on yeast. After mixing it with warm water and putting sugar into it, there was supposed to be a 'volcano' like reaction, well at least that's what I thought will happen, but we only managed to see a fizzle of tiny bubbles on one side of the jar. If anybody knows why please enlighten us. We did increase the amount of yeast and sugar but it didn't work.

Umayr got a laugh, all the kids did actually, for narration today because he got 'Old Mother Hubbard'. I laughed myself. Now that is what you call good old fun. He then worked on a lesson on 'Insects' with his brother. 'Insects' have now become a 'cash cow' and we need a new product for our lessons.

An attempt with 'Alice in Wonderland' didn't work out and I am now looking out for what the kids are interested in strongly as a group. It is gravitating towards 'Electricity' but the signs are not clear yet...

Assalamu alaikum

Yeast doesn't react as violently as sodium bicarbonate. If you want a volcano, you have to use sodium bicarbonate + and acid such as vinegar or lemon juice.

Yeast is an organism that eats sugar, then creates carbon dioxide. If you want the children to compare the 'reactions', you can put the warm water + sugar + yeast in a glass bowl. Eventually a froth will form on top of the water as the yeast 'burps' more :).

If the water is too cold, the yeast won't react. If it is too hot, you'll kill the yeast.

Well Done...plan more sessions with the kids!

Its great that you and the kids get to spend time with other kids who are homeschooled too, the kids get their time to play with the other kids and you get time to exchange ideas with the other mothers/teachers. Barka-Allaahu-feekum!
