Stripy, Spotty and Checked
I'm getting rusty at carrying out lesson plans, but hey, you need to start somewhere. At first, it was as usual my always enthusiastic student, Sofiyya, who wanted to carry out the 'dropping' experiment. However, when the boys saw it involved climbing a chair and dropping things they started to fighting to do it. Only managed to calm them down after much 'persuasion' myself.
I had initially plan to do it at the playground; it has a balcony like feature at the top, but changed my mind, I have to admit it, for my convenience as that would mean I would only be reading Galileo's Leaning Tower Experiment after the kids are done with their outdoors.
The children were very interested in the book. Ihsan and Umayr hypothesized that the book dropped first before the paper as it was heavier. I will not talk about the science behind it with them yet but instead go along with the exploration as we go along.
When we got back, we had time only for some snacks before their Arabic tutor came. As the kids have their sessions separately, I did an exercise on patterns with Umayr and Sofiyya based on the book we read for our reading session this morning called Pink Pyjamas.
I was surprised Umayr was enthusiastic about the exercise as, you know, it was a 'pink' book, but he seemed deeply engrossed in drawing his stripy, spotty and checked pyjamas and was irritated when his efforts at designing his fonts in colour met with some accidental errors. He only calmed down when I showed him how it could be taken care off with some colouring over.
Later in the day, Umayr converted one of our clothes hanger into a skating board. He got into quarrel with his sister when he wanted to overtake her, Sofiyya was riding on a buggy, from the kitchen, I suggested they make a STOP sign, just like those used during roadworks which has a GO on the other side.
For a while there was silence and a scurrying of little feet searching for materials to make the sign. After some problems deciding who to hold the sign, Ihsan was too busy reading to be the signholder, Umayr stuck it onto a cone and blocked off the hallway with his 'skateboard' and the buggy. Together with his sister, they declared his room a construction site. While I was busy preparing dinner, I could hear the construction 'noises' being made. Hmmm, could this be a theme forming?
Earlier in the day, Ihsan was asking me how the government earns money. I told him from taxes, COE, ERP and other government services. I could see the theme forming up with him and I thought with the coming elections it would be a good time to learn about government. Oookay, it's back to the drawing board but we'll stick with Galileo for the time being.
