Weekly Review

We had a late start this week, with distractions all coming at the same time. It took great effort to try to sit down and synchronise my lessons like before again into a theme. I think we tend to fall back on text and workbooks because they help us to manage our time even better and are easier alternatives although not necessarily the best to instil the love for learning in our children when used on its own.

It was refreshing though as I feel conflicted when I see my children fighting against their will at times when tasked with the rudimentary challenges of the text and the workbook. These watered down sources of information and exercises hardly inspire me, what more the children. I see a spark returning to their eyes when listening to stories of everyday things spelled out in more miraculous descriptions, (how in the world do you make dropping things more interesting?) and a stronger desire to carry out what was needed to find out more and even carry out independent research (which can range from just reading more of the book we are using for the topic or going on a full-scale project about it)

On Friday, we learned about famous buildings around the world, in connection to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which was used as a base for Galileo's experiment in the storybook. The children enjoyed learning about the tallest buildings in the world ( I never knew a double-decked lift existed) and Umayr, the former anti-academic, went on to read about the rest of the buildings on his own. A little quarrel even ensued over the book until mum managed to appease one with a similar book although one touching on famous works of art.

I hope to connect the children's academic lessons more with the topic of interest next week as I return to doing what I think is best for my children now that I have the time to.
