The Lost Curriculum Traveller

Confession- I was a curriculum junkie when I first started homeschooling. I devoured Montessori (although I think half the time I didn't understand what in the world she was talking about, it was as if she was speaking Italian). I walked through the forest with Steiner and got lost in his kaleidoscope of colour (theory) and was (un)schooled by Holt in the real world.

After all that, I had the crazy idea that I should pursue postgraduate studies in curriculum and was dumbfounded when none of them talked about all those I mentioned earlier. Apparently those were classified under pedagogy and unheard of in this part of the world unless, in the case of one of them, you are in the business of charging exorbitant fees for exclusive pre schooling.

In the end I freed myself of name-calling and called myself eclectic.
Liberated, I was free to choose from whatever I deemed best for my children.
All I needed was the Web and books from Amazon and Bookdepository.

I forgot the two books I should have firstly looked at deeply and reflected about when I started this journey.
They became secondary to the fancy Western theorists I talked about so excitedly.
Whom I thought were revolutionary.
Forgot what Muslim scholars wrote ages ago,
They were just for a philosophy,
Not being on the ground and learning.

My worldview was upside down.
My priorities twisted.

You may think you have left the secular world when you found God but the secular world is deep within you.

It never says goodbye.

So take it from the traveller who was once lost.
Before you go from Rosseau to Vygotsky, make sure you learn from Our Prophet (pbuh) and Luqman.
