Co-op Lesson 3
For today's lesson we sat in a in a cave and took a tumbling bus ride to the mountains. Okay, okay, we sat under a table talking about the First Revelation of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w and pretended to be a tour group to Jabal Nur.
I had wanted to bring a tent to recreate the scene in the cave, but alas, I can't find the motivation to drag an Ikea kids tent, a preschooler and a toddler without help with me and then I thought of how my children loved to build sanctuaries under my dining table. Was not the Cave of Hira' like a sanctuary to the Prophet s.a.w? So we sat under the table, turned off the lights and turned on a torchlight, to much concern of a few mums outside who were wondering what we were doing. Lol!
I opened with asking the children about their favourite place to hide when they are at home. One said she hid "in a cushion", another under her mother's bed, another "under a blanket" and one was so complicated I actually didn't really understand what she was saying.
I referenced with the hadith of Aisha r.a about the first revelation which I found in Al-Buti's Fiqh Sirah to write a simple story about it.
This was my in my lesson plan:

We did all this under the table with a torchlight shining on the floor at first and later blue-tacked to the bottom of the table (I made sure no one was sitting under the tiny torchlight). I then let the children draw their favourite hiding place. Apparently they enjoyed being under the table so much, they wanted to continue doing their work there instead of the table.
These are samples of their work:
For the second part of the lesson, I had wanted to do a walk through of the background of the Cave of Hira, i,e. its location relative to Mecca, how it looked like and the use of symbols and directions on maps (for this case a triangle for a mountain and the concept of northeast).
They were simply supposed to walk from one point of the class to the next where I had put up a map of Jabal Nur and pictures of The Cave of Hira' while I talked about each picture. Then I thought, whatever, we'll pretend to be tourists setting off from Mecca! So off everyone were soon comfortable in their seats on the bus, getting off when we reached Jabal Nur, climbing up the mountain to Hira' and sliding into the narrow entrance to the main area and again in reverse when we were going back.

This was my in my lesson plan:
Do you
have a favourite corner in your house where you like to be alone?
What is
it?
What do
you do there?
Why do
you like to be alone there?
We have
learned about the Prophet pbuh for the past three weeks. Today, for my last
lesson with you, we will learn how Islam as we know it till today was revealed
to the Prophet for the first time…
When the
Prophet pbuh was forty years old, he liked to spent his days in The Cave of
Hira in Jabal Nur. At that time. At that time in Mecca, a lot of people were disobedient to Allah and doing wrong things like worshipping idols, gambling
and cheating. The cave gave the Prophet a quiet and peaceful place for him to worship Allah.
Just like
when you go for a trip, the Prophet would bring the provisions he needed when
he spent time to the cave and sometimes his wife Khadijah would send someone to
deliver his food to him.
When the
Prophet was there one day, Jibrail (the Angel Gabriel) came to him and said
“Iqra’” (read) and he replied, “Ma Ana biqari’,” (I can’t read). Jibrail pulled the Prophet to him, embraced
him and released him and said, “Iqra” “Ma Ana Biqari’, “ replied the Prophet.
Jibrail
embraced the Prophet for the second time and released him and said, “Iqra’”
and the Prophet replied, “Ma Ana Biqari’, “. Jibrail embraced him for the third
time and released him and said.
“Read in the name of
your Lord who created -created man from a clot. Read: for your Lord is
Most Bountiful, who teaches by the pen, teaches man that which he knew not.”
(Quran 96:1-5)
“Read in the name of your Lord who created -created
man from a clot. Read: for your Lord is Most Bountiful, who teaches by
the pen, teaches man that which he knew not.” (Quran 96:1-5)
(Read in Arabic first and then provide
transliteration. If any of the students know the verses, you may ask her to
read instead)

Unfortunately we didn't take any pictures of this, because I was too busy pretending to be a tourist guide.
So to finish off the lesson for the day, I gave them a card with an illustration of the Cave of Hira' to record what they have learned today into their mini lapbook.
As this was my last lesson for this co-op, I summed up what I have taught with a timeline. I hope the lessons were beneficial for them as it was for me or even better insyaAllah.
