Today we discussed animal cruelty and war as part of our storybook session based on the books we read. When asked how we can avoid war, Umayr said that we can share...hehehe...literature mirroring life I guess. He disagreed with the character in the story buying a map instead of bread for his family as it meant the family went hungry even though the map was a source of inspiration for his son through his ordeal as a war refugee in the second world war.I thought it was appropriate, considering that we are fasting this month to consider other people who suffer everyday.
For Umayr today we made nomenclature cards for 'Things that a knight needs'. I traced and he decorated them and then I wrote what Umayr commented or looked up what each item was for or an interesting fact about it. I am now musing with the idea of whether it'll be right for him to make a sword. Maybe, I'll start with a shield first to buy time. Or we can try to build a castle.
Ihsan had to design a lever from household items. He first had to draw the plan in his lesson book and note the materials that he had to find. He of course used the ones right before his eyes. He then recorded what was done in his lesson book, identified weaknesses in his design and how he can improve on them. He tied in with Umayr's lesson when he realised that a third class lever would make a better design than his first class' catapult when he looked up a book on knights.
Here's Ihsan and his first class lever:
For Sofiyya, as an offshoot of her interest in the book ' Angelina's Ballet Class', I printed ballet positions cards for her and we did each action together. I wish I can send her to a real class. She's very interested. Maybe next year. The question is, what if she later wants to pursue it? Of course, I'm being far-fetched here, but there's always that possibility, you know.
Here's something we did a few months back based on the"Earth" theme.
