First Day of School
Today is Umayr's first day at primary level. The difference is we didn't have to drop him off at school and go through the anxiety of him being all by himself in that huge institution we call public schooling. Our plans to start a jogging routine had to be shelved today as it rained in the morning. The kids all had new shoes and Ihsan even woke up and showered at 3 a.m in the morning to prepare, not knowing that it was that early.
So instead, we had an earlier session of Quran reading and memorisation, much to their fresh back from the holidays chagrin, followed by breakfast. As usual, we started with reading and as the rain had stopped we decided to go on with our jog. Unfortunately, on the way to the park, it started drizzling and we made our way to the multi-purpose hall beside our block to do some 'running-round-the hall'?
When we came back, the kids started on their 'work' and I presented the small number rods to Sofiyya. It was interesting how she often seeked my approval when it was her turn to do it. My boys had no interest whatsoever in what I think when they do their stuff.
Umayr meanwhile decided to take the shoebox intended for holding their personal stationeries to make a bird, oh well. I then asked Ihsan to read 'What is a Million' for me to review the concept of number hierarchy to trillion and he then did an exercise on the use of commas as symbolisation to movement in place value.
I eventually got to do my presentation with Umayr on static addition with the golden beads. I initially reviewed his memory of number placing and realised that he remembers static addition with the golden beads and decided to do dynamic addition with a change in the unit place.
While I was presenting to Umayr,Ihsan reviewed his land and waterforms with the Evan-Moor unit on Asia. I proceeded to do sandpaper letters of 'k','u' and 'h' with Sofiyya and she then did an exercise on 'k' and 'l' and a review of 'e', 'f', 'g','h' and 'i' on her Letterland book.
I had consistently put it to Umayr that at primary one his counterparts in school already have to read and it seemed to have motivated him to try instead of whining or relying on me when he has to do written work. In fact, when he was doing his review on short 'o' sounds on his Schoolzone Second Grade Big Book, he was irritated when I tried to help his reading. He then did simple unit addition on the same book.
After lunch, we went to Lot One to return the library books which were due and even though they are not going to 'school' each had a new bag to start the new year and thus mummy can also carry less luggage. After the library session, we went to the rooftop garden where the kids played on the playground before going home and Mummy only bought Umayr's Malay workbook and nothing more.
Its very strange, the kids are doing their work now as I'm blogging...hmmm...maybe I should have evening sessions too and without them even realising it.
