Aymara

Today we did the Aymara flag, which I thought is so beautiful and almost like one of those colour codes newspapers use. I initially just wanted to explore the flag and let the children weave the strips of coloured paper I bought from the $2 shop, but then I realised that it was not that complicated and I used the opportunity to teach the younger children fractions as I fold and cut the strips into halves, quarters and eights.

As the same colour goes diagonally across the flag it was also a chance to teach what is diagonal to them. Sofiyya had a bit of difficulty with this and needed a lot of guidance on where to put the pieces of paper. As a guide, I put the colours of each diagonal in a column so the children can just continue from there. Ihsan was pretty independent and did everything himself.

Here are their work:

Since they were on flags, I figured it was a good time to review the national anthem. I laid out the flag onto the mat as we sat around it. We watched a video on youtube and thereafter sung the anthem ourselves. The kids were still stumbling over 'bersatu' and 'berseru' but overall it was ok.

We then looked at the different Asian flags cards and played general knowledge, more for Ihsan, and language games, for the younger ones, with them. After school I managed to continue my attempt at making a skirt for Sofiyya, a roughly handsewn one, I don't have a machine, minus the hemming and a dress for her doll. It was a fruitful day except for the brokendown looking house which has been pretty much neglected today as I am a bit lethargic and was only able to do sit-down work.
