Week 3 2017

Before you know it, we are already in the third week of homeschooling. Already we have digressed to planning on the whiteboard (?!) But as I always say, some planning is better than none.

I always find it difficult to start the week and this is where I fall back on my trusty books and printouts.

Sofi has been progressing well with additions and subtractions so I thought I'd speed up to multiplication, but apparently this is where she gets stunted, especially with word problems.

So I have to retract and maybe make her use more of her right brain and test her tables from memory and identify patterns in them instead while introducing word problems in stages-you know how Singapore math just gets real abstract suddenly. I totally believe they think everyone is mathematically inclined.

Meanwhile, I went through the 1-5 tables with Sarah and introduced her to the six tables. My strategy with her is using a mental number line (because that seems to work with her) and skip counting. This is embedded into memory over time.

I also love to use the 100-chart. Sarah would skip 5 numbers and shade every 6th number on it for her 6th table, for example, as she did yesterday. Today, we will make use of the shaded table to fill up the traditional table of 1×6= ___ and so on.

As she was doing her chart yesterday she decided to multitask and sing with her baby sister too. Is it Tuesday already?
