Xbox Box Xbox Box Try Me Out for Size

Teaching is like going on stage, you get the jitters about whether things will play out in class as you imagined it. You learn that if you go with the flow everything will work itself out but you still overprepare and get nervous anyway.

I had planned out in my mind what class should be like today but it was interrupted by the gift of a box by my oldest whose xbox was delivered at the start of class.

The children were excited by the prospect and after testing it out for size, literally, by someone going inside, decided it should be a playhouse. A student went ahead to cut out one side of the flaps (oh calm my heart for the scissors snipping away).

I helped a bit later when they tired out from snipping the cardboard with a penknife which of course the same student decided she should try as well.

As I made some adjustment to the doors, the children grouped themselves into pairs to draw the windows and I suggested to the remaining two to decorate the doors.

One of the students decided to draw on the roof and I said, "You don't put windows on the roof." On the realisation of the limit that I have put on my students imagination, I backtracked and said," But that's a good idea." Skylights are delightful additions after all.

Where before she showed hesitation and doubt, she was soon happily drawing with pencil and ruler. "Phew!" that was close.

After I cut out the windows, the students decorated with colour pencils, crayons and stickers. Showing pride in their work, one student was upset that another was drawing on her windows.

I tried to negotiate, luckily she moved to another part of the box after putting her stamp where she wanted and her classmate was happy just for the fact she left her windows alone.

I then asked how they are going to play in it and suggested that the smallest-sized student go inside to test for size and check out the windows.

"It is too small for us."
"Only our toys can play inside."

After a few students went into the box, the students went off for snack and lessons.

They came back to it later during break. One decided to put the box on her head and said she was a monster and started chasing the other students.

The students decided on who would be the monster and took turns to play around the house. I don't know where the box is now by the way.

That is the story of an xbox box that became a playhouse, a potential dollhouse and the head of a monster.
