Ramadan Day 2

Sarah started her activity today when I fell asleep in the afternoon by reading our Ramadan calendar card which encourages the children to say their five prayers.

She had prayed Zuhr when I was asleep and was eager to do "something fun" when I woke up. While she did not wake up for sahur, Sarah had not eaten or drank anything after breakfast and was asking when iftar was as she was hungry. So we made a Ramadan time notice board.

Inspired by a friend's Ramadan board; I decided we could make a clock on top of an Iftar time notice. So we made the clock face and hands and used the living room clock as the reference. I showed her how to measure the circumference, the length of the circle, with a string and ruler.

We then learned how to find the midpoint by folding the circle into half two ways, and then marked the edges for 12, 3, 6 and 9. I then showed her how to divide the space between two numbers into three to mark the 2 numbers between.

We revised what each hand stood for and how they form the base for the other, i.e. the second hand's 60 movements around the clock from 12 makes the minute hand move 1 marker or 1 min and so on.

After putting the hands with a fastener, we looked up the time for iftar today on my handphone app.We revised that each number counts to five minutes as can be seen when we count the first marker after 12, with 12 being the zero minute.

Sarah learned how to write the digital time, placing the colon to separate the hour and minute.

We made solat markers with cutouts from a previous craft. I cut 2 slits to put a thin piece of paper through at the base like a ticker tape so I can easily change it when needed.

Then, I wrote the names in Arabic on the solat markers and Sarah wrote down the times from the solat app on the tape. Sarah decorated a mosque cutout from a previous craft session and voila! We are done.
