Homeschoolers Outing

Today was outing day for our small group of Muslim homeschoolers here at Choa Chu Kang Park. Being the anxious homeschooler that I am, sometimes I think I have anxiety disorder, I squeezed in some school time before our meeting. Continuing our botany lessons, we read on pollination and animal helpers of plants from the book 'Flowers and Seeds' by Brannigan & Dunne. We got to the park an hour earlier to do some nature drawing.

My initial plan was for them to observe some flowering and non-flowering plants but the only flowering plants we could find was the ginger and ixora plants. The kids ended up drawing the tree of their favourite fruit, the durian.

I found an interesting website on animal sounds at http://www.abc.net.au/children/bananas/games/animal_sounds/default2.htm. We are learning about the ear, sound and farming with relation to planting which of course is related to farm animals which is related to animals; you get the drift.

I first got the children to match the sound to the animals and later let them match the sounds themselves. I was supposed to remake my sound bottles for their montessori work but alas has been unable to find the bottles and am now behind my planned lessons. Through the years however, I have learned to not let not getting things done to plan stop me from teaching a lesson though. There is never a best time for everything and sometimes you just have to work with what you have.

Yesterday, I also found an Arabic writing book for Sofiyya at http://www.yemenlinks.com/Arabic_Download.htm#Writing Practice Forms. I used the Goodword books with her brothers, but this seems good enough and I intend to continue with the Ad-Duha book Umayr is using now when she is more advanced.

Our farm animals rolls.

My latest method of trying to remember my lesson plan for the day, pasting my handwritten plan on my bookshelf.
