Flowers
Nothing brightens up a room than a bunch of flowers, especially when you're surrounded by grey, cold bricks wherever you go. I got myself my favourite pink lilies two weeks ago, they turned out to be different from the ones I usually bought, they had hair-like spots at the center and did not give out as strong a scent.
I of course conveniently used this for my lessons on flowers, which followed my lessons on leaves and was connected to my previous lessons on birds and bees. Did I just put birds and bees in one line?
It would have been wonderful to have been able to go to the Botanic Gardens, however apart from still feeling weak, from all that lazing around when I was down with the flu,the weather was unforgiving.
In my dreams, we would walk through fields of lavender, blow daffodils and eat sunflower seeds. Alas, I think I can only do the last part. So I did the next best thing; use my house decoration to learn about flowers.
We looked at and talked about the great work that the different parts of the lily does; the male and female reproduction system, the corolla, the petals, the sepal. I had help from Comstock's 'Handbook of Nature Study' and of course the internet.
For art, I drew the lily on the blackboard while the children did theirs in their lesson book. We then labelled the different parts of the flower. Everyday, the children would make comments on how the flowers, which I put on the dining table, have changed and were happy when it died because I told them that it meant that now its time for the seeds to do their magic.
Unfortunately, of course our pollens will not be able to carry out their work at our home. I am now busy searching for seeds; I don't even know what broad beans are but that just means I'm gonna learn something new. Seeds are the natural progression to what we have been doing.
I am toying with the idea of studying Spain for Geography, to play on my boys current craziness with the World Cup, and branch out to the study of Europe. Spain of course also holds some of the most beautiful Islamic architecture and was home to a great civilisation. How appropriate to tie in with our greatest month of the year.
